With a record number of drivers expected to hit the road for the holidays to visit friends and family, Ford is making it even easier to charge your EV.

Ford wants EV charging to be as easy as possible

After many flights were cancelled or delayed due to the US government shutdown, more Americans are projected to drive over the upcoming holidays than ever before.

According to AAA, a record 81.8 million drivers are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the Thanksgiving holiday from Tuesday, November 25 to Monday, December 1. That’s an additional 1.6 million travelers from last Thanksgiving.

Ford is making the trip a bit easier for EV owners this holiday season. Starting today, November 20, Ford EV drivers can use Plug & Charge at IONNA stations across the US.

IONNA currently has 1,110 fast chargers open or under construction, but it’s quickly expanding. The charging network announced plans on Thursday to invest over $250 million in California over the next three years to develop charging infrastructure. By the end of the decade, it aims to expand to 30,000.

Ford is also starting to roll out Plug & Charge to its own-branded fast chargers, “Ford Charge,” which the company launched in August.

The network currently offers 1,200 fast chargers at over 330 Ford dealerships. By early 2026, the company aims to enable it at all Ford Charge stations in the US and Canada.

Ford was one of the first automakers to launch Plug & Charge through the BlueOval Charge Network with Electrify America in 2020 and the Tesla Supercharger network last year.

According to Ford, drivers using Plug & Charge have a 99.9% success rate. Beyond just finding a charger, Plug & Charge makes it easier than pumping gas by allowing you to simply plug in and pay without pulling out a credit card.

Through the Ford app, EV drivers have access to 21 charging networks, including Tesla, Electrify America, ChargePoint, EVgo, Shell Recharge, and more.

Ford will continue expanding Plug & Charge to partners in the BlueOval Charge Network, including Shell Recharge.

Earlier this week, the company announced it’s selling certified pre-owned vehicles on Amazon, including the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E.
