Amnesty International has accused the United States of being responsible for a missile attack on a primary school in Minab, Iran, which resulted in the deaths of at least 170 people, mostly children.

The organisation has called for accountability for those involved in the incident.

According to Amnesty, evidence suggests that a US-manufactured Tomahawk missile—used exclusively by US forces—was deployed in the ongoing conflict.

Through the analysis of satellite imagery, video footage, and expert interviews, Amnesty concluded that the school was directly hit, along with several other buildings in a nearby compound belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The rights group stated, “This points to a failure by US forces to take feasible precautions to avoid civilian harm,” calling the attack a severe violation of international humanitarian law. Amnesty also raised concerns that outdated intelligence may have led to the school being misidentified as a military target.

Newly released video shows the moment that a BGM-109 Tomahawk Land Cruise Attack Missile (TLAM) fired by the U.S. Navy struck a facility operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Southern Iranian city of Minab on February 28, 2026. US officials have stated that the incident is under investigation. However, human rights experts and UN observers have described the attack as a grave assault on children. Amnesty emphasised the need to hold those responsible for planning and executing the strike accountable.

The report also cited comments from US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who earlier this month asserted that the US would not adhere to “stupid rules of engagement” in its offensive against Iran, a move that has alarmed international legal experts.

Erika Guevara-Rosas, Amnesty’s senior director of research and policy, said, “If the school was not identified and the strike went ahead, this would indicate gross negligence and a serious violation of international humanitarian law.”

This investigation contributes to the increasing scrutiny of US and Israeli military actions in Iran, with significant implications for potential allegations of war crimes.
