King Charles delivered his speech on 7 November 2023

Leasehold remains firmly in the headlines and featured prominently in the King’s Speech earlier this month, when the government set out its plans for the next phase of leasehold reform.

Bishop & Sewell will host a legal webinar today to  provide leaseholders and agents with essential information about the proposed reforms, their potential impact and what this means for those in the process of buying their freehold, extending their lease, or contemplating beginning a claim.

Delivered by partners Mark Chick and Chris McCartney from the firm’s Landlord and Tenant team, the free online webinar ‘Leasehold Question Time – ‘What do proposed reforms mean for leaseholders?’ will take place this afternoon between 5pm and 6pm.

Chick said: “Leasehold issues have remained firmly in the news, and the recent King’s Speech has provided an important indication of the government’s focus for the next phase of leasehold reform.

“The government has now set out its key policies, including increasing the standard lease extension term from 90 years to 990 years, removing the requirement for a new leaseholder to have owned their house or flat for two years, and increasing the 25% ‘non-residential’ limit, which currently prevents leaseholders in mixed use buildings from buying their freehold or taking over management of their buildings.

“This webinar is aimed primarily at leaseholders and will provide essential information about the implications of these proposed reforms, while addressing the question of what leaseholders who are currently pursuing enfranchisement claims, or intend to do so in the near future, should do in practical terms.”

There will also be of opportunity for questions, but delegates must pre-register to attend here.
