Consumer ‘spending surged’ over the bank holiday as Brits hit the pubs and bars – London Business News | London Wallet

According to spending data Brits hit the pubs and bars over the bank holiday weekend as the temperatures rose.

Barclays data found that on Saturday and Sunday spending rose by more than 27% compared to the same period last year.

Despite the energy and cost of living crisis Brits spent more this year and spending in restaurants was up by more than a tenth, Barclays found tracking their cardholders transactions.

Data also found that spending on football and golf was by almost 17% in sales and caravan and camping sites surged by 18%.

Marc Pettican, the head of Barclaycard Payments, said, “Consumer spending surged over the weekend, especially in the hospitality and leisure sectors, as the arrival of the warmer weather kicked off more sports and socialising.

“This uplift in trade will be some welcome news for the hospitality sector, amidst the ongoing strain of rising energy bills and the impact of the cost of living.

“Businesses will no doubt remain hopeful that customers continue to offer their support and keep venues busy as we head into the summer season.”
