British and French paratroopers are poised and ready, after completing final preparations for a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.
This effort, as reported by The Telegraph, could come to fruition if Ukraine and Russia manage to reach a peace agreement.
On February 24, military drills were conducted in Brittany, marking an important milestone for these elite soldiers.
They are now prepared for deployment anywhere across NATO territories, and this training forms part of Exercise Orion, which will wrap up on March 3.
These developments closely follow remarks from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who indicated that both Britain and France are prepared to lead a peacekeeping force in Ukraine should a ceasefire be achieved between Kyiv and Moscow.
The Telegraph highlighted that more than 600 troops from the UK’s prestigious 16 Air Assault Brigade took part in a simulated raid, collaborating closely with France’s 11th Parachute Brigade.
While specifics regarding the units that may be deployed to Ukraine have not yet been shared, the 16 Air Assault Brigade stands out as one of the UK’s elite high-readiness forces, specifically designed for rapid deployment under NATO’s command.
Exercise Orion involved around 2,000 personnel from both British and French forces, focusing on rapid deployment, interoperability, and strengthening NATO’s readiness against potential threats of insurgency and invasion, demonstrating the strategic importance of these drills.
During this comprehensive exercise, the forces showcased their skills by repelling simulated attacks, executing ambushes, and launching offensive operations. Under the leadership of French commanders at the Orléans-Bricy air base near Paris, British reconnaissance units and paratroopers successfully conducted covert operations at the Saint-Cyr-Coëtquidan training area. They neutralised simulated air-defence assets while establishing a landing zone for additional troops, including the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. Notably, an Italian parachute platoon also took part, with an RAF A400M aircraft delivering vital supplies afterwards.
French General Renaud Ronde emphasised that these drills are instrumental in testing new technologies and strategies, particularly around hybrid communications networks and drone integration. He highlighted the importance of rapid innovation and adaptability to maintain a competitive edge on the battlefield.
While there is a strong commitment, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has mentioned that Britain and France are prepared to each deploy around 5,000 troops for a potential mission in Ukraine. Recognising the importance of this readiness can help the audience feel more assured about international efforts.
Armed Forces Minister Al Carns has noted that Britain has a window of roughly three to five years to prepare for a possible confrontation with a large state, highlighting the challenges in modernising the army after years of limited change.
