Enel North America has signed a 12-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with food and beverage giant Tate & Lyle North America for clean power from Texas wind.

The deal brings approximately 256,000 megawatt hours from Enel’s Ranchland Wind + Storage Plant in Texas to power all of Tate & Lyle’s North American operations with clean energy. The PPA will enable Chicago-headquartered Tate & Lyle to meet its goal of “100% of the purchased electricity for its North American operations coming from renewable sources.”

Texas generates more wind power than any other state, accounting for over 28% of US total wind capacity, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Enel’s Ranchland Wind + Storage Plant, in Callahan and Eastland counties, is a 63-turbine, 263-megawatt (MW) project paired with an 87-MWdc battery storage system. It can power the equivalent of 94,000 US households annually, and helps avoid over 363,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

Tate & Lyle’s climate targets are in line with a 1.5C trajectory and have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. It’s focusing on cutting energy consumption, increasing renewable energy use, and supporting sustainable agriculture. Nick Hampton, chief executive of Tate & Lyle, said, “Through this agreement, we will be able to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our ingredients and support our customers to achieve their decarbonization goals.”

Enel North America is the fourth-largest owner of clean power capacity in the US.
