Clive Rook

Clive Rook, a well-known and highly respected figure in the property industry and the founder of Rook Matthews Sayer, a 16-branch agency operating across the northeast from Newcastle to Northumberland, has sadly passed away.

The estate agency shared the news of his passing to inform the wider community and to honour the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. Clive was instrumental in building Rook Matthews Sayer into one of the North East’s most recognised estate agency brands, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues, clients, and industry peers alike.

Further tributes are expected in the coming days as the property community reflects on his contribution to the sector and the values he instilled in the business he founded.

Rook Matthews Sayer said:

“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Clive Rook, an esteemed founder of Rook Matthews Sayer and a true pioneer of the North East property industry.

“Clive was more than just a Chartered Surveyor, he was a visionary whose leadership and drive helped shape the business we are so proud of today. From the very beginning, he, alongside his co-founders, dedicated himself to building a company that placed people first, our customers, our communities, and our colleagues.

“Under Clive’s leadership, Rook Matthews Sayer grew into one of the region’s leading estate agencies, a legacy built on trust, professionalism, and deep local knowledge. His influence extended far beyond our offices, he served on the board of Agents’ Mutual, advised countless others in the industry, and most recently supported important housing work through his role at Durham Action on Single Housing, who provide supported housing for those who need it most.

“Clive’s commitment to community went beyond the property world. Spearheading Rook Matthews Sayer’s charitable events, donating to, among others, Marie Curie and Help For Heroes. Along with his sons Stuart and Jonathan, Clive joined Jim O’Connor of the charity Dorothy’s Well on a trip to Tanzania. There, they helped hand over four clean water wells to rural communities, with Clive donating one of the wells in memory of his beloved wife, Lynn.

“Clive also had a passion for sport, including Tennis, Skiing, Croquet and Football, all of which he loved to do on a regular basis and he will no doubt be equally missed by all his teammates over the years.

“Those of us who had the privilege of working alongside Clive will remember his generous mentorship and passion for property. He was not just a founder, but a friend too and we will ensure his impact lives on in every corner of this business.

“Our thoughts are with Clive’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy, one that we will continue to honour every day.

“Clive’s funeral will take place on 12th August at Bethany Church, Houghton Le Spring, Durham at 12.15pm

“Rest in peace, Clive. You will be missed.

“RMS”
