No, Ford is not bringing the Ranger plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to the US. Ford shut down rumors that the midsize pickup would launch in the US. Here’s what’s coming instead.

Ford will not launch the Ranger PHEV in the US

Although Ford is planning to expand its hybrid lineup in the US over the next few years, the Ranger will not be included.

The American automaker confirmed the news during a recent media event, according to Car and Driver, claiming its current truck lineup offers plenty of alternatives.

With traditional gas-powered hybrid Maverick and F-150 options, plus the electric F-150 Lightning, Ford doesn’t see the need for a Ranger PHEV in the US. The same goes for the Ranger Super Duty. Ford already offers the half-ton F-150 and F-Series Super Duty, which it said are better suited for US buyers.

While US buyers have several pickup truck options to choose from, Ford only offers the Ranger in most overseas markets. It has been Europe’s best-selling pickup for the past 10 years.

Ford began shipping the F-150 Lightning overseas early last year, starting with Norway. Last month, however, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ford is considering scrapping the electric pickup altogether after halting production following a supplier fire that disrupted aluminum supply.

During its Q3 earnings call last month, Ford said the F-150 Lightning will remain on hold while it focuses on more profitable gas and hybrids.

Ford’s EV sales in the US plunged 60.8% last month following the expiration of the $7,500 federal tax credit. Ford sold just 1,006 Lightnings in the US last month, down 72% from November 2024.

The news comes after Automotive News reported earlier this month that Ford will launch a new Bronco PHEV in Europe that will be built at its Valencia, Spain assembly plant.

Electrek’s Take

Although the Lightning may be as good as dead, Ford is betting on smaller, more affordable EVs for its upcoming lineup.

The new Ford Universal EV platform will underpin a series of midsize electric vehicles, promising longer driving range, more advanced tech, and lower costs.

Ford’s first EV based on the new low-cost platform will be a midsize pickup, similar to the Ranger or Maverick. It’s due out in 2027 with starting prices around $30,000. On the company’s Q3 earnings call last month, CEO Jim Farley said more affordable EVs are “not a distant plan,” adding they are “right around the corner” for Ford.

Although those in the US won’t see a Ranger PHEV, Ford is planning to offer a midsize fully electric pickup. You’ll just have to wait a few years.
