Hundreds of journalists who are members if the National Union of Journalists are on strike from today until 25 September in a dispute over pay.

Journalists who work at National World which owns The Scotsman, Yorkshire Post, Lancashire Post and the Sunderland Echo are striking in protest over a 4.5% pay offer.

Strike action comes as journalists who work for National World have low morale, financial hardship and there are growing fears of job insecurity.

National World’s half year financial results indicated that the company has cash reserves of £22 million.

Laura Davison, NUJ national organiser, said on Friday, “We know National World can afford to revise its pay package for staff, ensuring journalists can afford to remain at the jobs they rightly take pride in.

“Members have demonstrated their collective power by taking strike action, and without a rethink from David Montgomery and his board, National World risks further alienating staff.

“The sustainability of local journalism requires skilled, talented journalists and with over 100 titles, National World has a responsibility to ensure its staff are paid decent salaries, preventing the financial hardship we know some journalists at the company experience.

“I want to thank every member who is taking part in the action to stand up for their colleagues and campaign for fair pay at National World”
