Despite intensified diplomatic efforts, a lasting ceasefire in Ukraine appears unlikely in the near term. Senior European officials have told The Wall Street Journal that the conflict could continue for another one to three years.

According to the WSJ, recent talks between Kyiv and Moscow have largely become performative. A senior Ukrainian official, speaking anonymously, said the rounds of negotiations this year—including meetings in Geneva and Abu Dhabi—have been more about creating an impression of constructiveness than achieving concrete progress.

“The upbeat diplomatic buzzwords belie the impasse in a peace process that many observers, and even some participants, said has turned into political theatre,” the publication reports. Recognising this deadlock underscores the importance of the current situation for policymakers and analysts, highlighting the need for careful attention.

The discussions are reportedly influenced by the US political context, with both sides attempting to avoid appearing uncooperative to former President Donald Trump. Former US NATO ambassador Ivo Daalder described the situation as “a game to avoid being blamed for Trump’s failure to end the war,” noting that optimistic diplomatic statements often mask a broader deadlock.

With no breakthrough in sight, European allies are preparing for a long-term confrontation. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told Der Spiegel that he sees little chance of a rapid negotiated settlement. This outlook aims to make the audience feel the importance of strategic patience and ongoing vigilance.

Analysts note that the political dimension of the negotiations remains largely frozen, reinforcing expectations of sustained military activity in Ukraine over the next several years.

Amid the deadlock, Russian and anonymous Telegram channels have circulated claims—attributed to WSJ journalist Bojan Pancevski—that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is preparing for three more years of war. While presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn dismissed these reports as fabrications, the circulation of such claims highlights the influence of misinformation on perceptions of the conflict’s future.

Observers stress that, absent a credible diplomatic breakthrough, the war in Ukraine may continue for the foreseeable future. Both military and political strategies are likely to remain central to the positions of Kyiv, Moscow, and their international partners, as the prospect of a rapid resolution fades. This emphasises the importance of staying informed and adaptable.
