RAF Typhoon fighter jets have joined their first NATO air defence mission over Poland following violations of 19 Russian drones over the country which were shot down.
The RAF Typhoons set off from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire on Friday night for their defensive mission, who were given the call signs of “chaos 1-1″ and “chaos 1-2”
Nothing took place on their first NATO “Eastern Sentry” operation and they were helped with Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft.
On 10 September Russia fired 19 drones which entered Polish airspace and were shot down, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk issued a warning that they are now the closest to “open conflict” for the first time since World War II.
Defence Secretary John Healey said the RAF are “standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Poland in defence of our shared security.”
Healey added, “RAF Typhoons have now flown their first air defence mission over Poland, sending a clear signal: NATO airspace will be defended.
“I’m proud of the outstanding British pilots and air crew who took part in this successful operation to defend our Allies from reckless Russian aggression.
