Rail disruption to continue until Saturday amid Storm Ciaran

Train passengers are being warned to expect delays until Saturday morning as the Met Office has put in place weather warnings for Storm Ciaran.

For the east coast from the Moray coast stretching down to Hull a yellow weather warning is in place until 6am Friday.

The service between Newcastle and Edinburgh will run hourly from Thursday at 3pm until the service ends on Friday and speed restrictions will be in place causing delays of up to 40 minutes.

There will also be speed restrictions in place for parts of Scotland imposed by Network Rail and most of ScotRail services will not be affected.

David Simpson, ScotRail service delivery director, said: “The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Storm Ciaran, which is expected to bring heavy rain across the east coast of Scotland.

“Our first priority is always to ensure the safety of our staff and customers, so as a precautionary measure, speed restrictions will be in place across the Highlands and east coast. This will result in extended journey times along the affected routes.

“We’re asking customers to check their journey before travel, and to keep an eye on our website, app, or social media feeds for live updates.”
