Ram is finally giving the people what they want. No, it’s not that fully electric truck we’ve been waiting for, but Ram is building its first SUV. Like the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Rams SUV will be offered with a new extended-range EV powertrain. Here’s what we know so far.
Ram is launching its first SUV
Although we likely won’t ever see that fully electric truck we had hoped for, Ram is finally set to introduce its first SUV.
Stellantis announced during its third-quarter earnings on Thursday that Jeep and Ram’s lineup are due for some big changes.
After several delays, Ram’s all-electric pickup, the Ram 1500 REV, was declared dead last month. Stellantis discontinued development of the EV version, blaming slowing demand for electric pickups.
The move is part of a broader shake-up in Stellantis’ electrification plans. On its Q3 earnings call, CEO Antonio Filosa said that the $13 billion investment announced earlier this month will support the introduction of five new vehicles to the US while boosting production by 50%.
Filosa explained that Ram will receive “a much more comprehensive product range” over the next few years, including its first SUV.
Ram’s lineup will include a new “large SUV” and a midsize pickup by 2028. They will join the range-extended Ram 1500 REV, set to arrive in 2026.
Ram’s SUV and midsize pickup will also be offered with a range-extended hybrid powertrain, in addition to a gas-powered version.
Although Stellantis didn’t reveal any other details, it’s expected to use the same liquid-cooled 92 kWh battery pack as the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, delivering up to 500 miles of combined range. Power is transferred from a 3.6-liter V6 to a 130 kW generator. When the battery gets low, the engine acts as a generator to extend the driving range.
Jeep is already showing signs of a recovery in the US with quarterly sales up 11%, nearly double the US average of 6%.
By the end of the year, Jeep will introduce four new vehicles, including the 2026 Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Wagoneer, which will arrive as the first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) in the US.
Part of the $13 billion investment will be used to build the Jeep Compass and Cherokee at Stellantis’ Belvidere plant in Illinois, which Filosa said was critical to its “strong offensive in the sub-$40K US dollar market.”
Jeep is also expected to unveil the “very unique trail-rated Recon,” an all-electric off-road SUV, by the end of the year. Stellantis CEO confirmed that the Jeep Recon EV will go on sale in 2026 despite rumors claiming the electric SUV was being canceled.
