Roulette is one of the most popular casino games in the world. The red and the black wheel is so iconic, that many establishments, both land-based and online use it as a symbol of their brand. Fans also enjoy roulette, because of the game’s simplicity, which is why it is so popular at online casinos.

Roulette is, in fact, one of the favorite games of many online casino fans. Especially recently, online casinos have begun using livestreams to attract new fans. Thanks to streaming tech, live roulette is now possible, and long-time fans of the game are excited.

The success of roulette has bled into popular culture in general. Not only has online roulette become a hit, but the wheel has been represented across different media, and in this article, we would like to go over different roulette representations.

 Casablanca (1942)

One of the oldest depictions of the classic casino game in Hollywood was in 1942, when the romantic drama Casablanca enamored audiences. Rick, played by Humphrey Bogart, is a shady café and casino owner in Cuba, who is reunited with an old flame.

They often meet in Rick’s casino, where fans can be seen playing roulette in the background. Not only that, but roulette serves as a great symbol of Rick’s character, serving to establish him as a cheater. He has rigged all of his wheels to ensure that the house always wins.

The Gambler, by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of Russia’s most notable writers, and a global cultural icon. After a very traumatizing event in a Siberian prison, Dostoevsky returned to Russian society to write some of the most influential novels of all time.

Among them was The Gambler, a pseudo-autobiographical novella about a young professor who becomes enamored with roulette. The novel drew from Fyodor’s own life, which was filled with drinking and gambling. Roulette was a particularly favorite game of the notable writer.

Grand Theft Auto

The GTA franchise is well-known for its emphasis on the taboo topics in society, like violence, sex, and gambling. Throughout the franchise, players have taken the role of mobsters, gangsters, and former soldiers. The one thing that fans wanted was an online version of GTA, and in 2013, they got what they wanted.

Grand Theft Auto V, or GTA Online is a multiplayer game, where players can interact among each other and undertake missions together. One thing they can do is visit the iconic Diamond Casino, and play a variety of games, including roulette.

The most interesting thing about the game is that you can wager actual money when playing at the Diamond Casino. However, you can’t win any money, as that would break several laws. Instead, players can win different skins, cars, and even unique weaponry.

“At the Roulette Table” by Edvard Munch

Finally, the art world has also greatly benefited from roulette references. The most notable example would be Edvard Munch’s incredible painting, “At the Roulette Table at Monte Carlo.” Monte Carlo is one of the world’s most noteworthy gambling destinations, and many consider it Europe’s Las Vegas.

The painting depicts several people huddled around the roulette table, going over their bankrolls and deciding how much to wager. The players are all faceless, which leads many to different interpretations of the painting.
