Seven in ten (68%) of the UK public say that the Conservative Party is currently “unelectable”, including four in ten (42%) 2024 Conservative voters, according to new research from polling company Savanta.

Savanta’s new research suggests there is a “huge gulf between the Conservative and Labour Party brands”, with some sobering findings for all the Conservative leadership contenders:

Just one in five (19%) of UK adults think that the Conservative Party is “electable” right now, compared to two thirds (63%) who say that Labour is electable.

Even fewer (15%) say that the Conservative Party is “united”, including one in four (26%) Conservative voters, compared to 54% who say Labour is united.

Only one in four (27%) say the Conservative Party “understands the issues facing the country”, versus nearly six in ten (57%) for Labour.

Savanta’s findings do suggest some challenges ahead for Labour as well as the Conservatives, as well as a level of cynicism about politics.

Only 32% say that the Labour Party “keeps its promises”, with 36% saying Labour breaks its promises and 32% don’t know. For the Conservatives, only 17% say they keep their promises.

The public is split on whether Labour “stands up for people like me”, with 43% saying they do, 39% saying they don’t.

Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at Savanta said, “Our research shows just how much of a huge gulf between the Conservative and Labour Party brands there is. Anyone serious about leading the Conservative Party needs to contend with their legacy after 14 years of government – a lack of trust, unity and electability.”

“It’s not all plain sailing for Labour however, with a sense of cynicism from the electorate aimed at Keir Starmer’s party also. It is clear that voters think parties of all stripes fail to keep their promises, including Labour.”
