Sir Keir Starmer has opened his first Cabinet meeting on Saturday, telling ministers: “We have a huge amount of work to do.”

The new Prime Minister was getting down to business on Saturday after Labour’s landslide victory in the General Election.

The Cabinet gathering in Number 10 comes as Sir Keir looks to start working on his party’s manifesto pledges and prepare for a Nato summit next week.

Rachel Reeves was confirmed as Britain’s first woman chancellor. Angela Rayner is Sir Keir’s Deputy Prime Minister and retained the levelling up, housing and communities brief, and Yvette Cooper is Home Secretary.

In a surprise move, Shadow attorney general Emily Thornberry will not take on the post in Government, with Sir Keir instead choosing barrister Richard Hermer KC.

It comes amid reports Sir Keir has killed off Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda deportation plan with Labour sources calling the plan “effectively dead”.

See all the London election results here:

In his first speech on Downing Street on Friday, Sir Keir said the British people had voted “decisively for change”.

Following a brutal set of results for the Conservatives, Rishi Sunak announced he would quit as Tory leader and used his final speech in Downing Street to apologise to the British people and the Conservative Party.

After 649 of the 650 Commons seats had been declared, Labour had a majority of 176 aa the Tories suffered the worst result in the party’s history.
