The Prime Minister has warned the threat from Russia to the UK’s national security must not be underestimated and he is set to announce further sanctions on Moscow.
Sir Keir Stamer has said Britain will “do everything in our power to destroy” Vladimir Putin’s shadow fleet which has shipped more than $24 billion of cargo since the beginning of 2024.
The government will now take action against 100 oil tankers that is currently shipping cargo illegally in defiance of Western sanctions.
The government said Russia‘s shadow fleet are undertaking “reckless seafaring” damaging critical infrastructure such as the undersea cable in the Baltic Sea.
Starmer insists placing further pressure on Moscow is further steps “towards security and prosperity in the UK” and will bring Ukraine closer to peace.
Starmer added, “The threat from Russia to our national security cannot be underestimated, that is why we will do everything in our power to destroy his shadow fleet operation, starve his war machine of oil revenues and protect the subsea infrastructure that we rely on for our everyday lives.
“My government will safeguard working people from paying the price from the costly threat Putin’s fleet poses to UK critical national infrastructure and the environment.”
