T

he Super Bowl is almost upon us as one of the sporting world’s biggest annual events takes centre stage tonight.

Hundreds of millions of fans around the world will tune in again to the enduring jewel in the American sporting crown, with no shortage of musical entertaiment and those hugely expensive and addictive commercials also on offer in addition to the unmissable action on the field.

The 57th edition of the Super Bowl – LVII, to use the correct Roman numerals – takes us to Arizona, where the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs will duel for supremacy in a mouthwatering and historic match-up in the desert of two loaded teams and star quarterbacks.

The Chiefs are back on this familiar hallowed stage after exacting revenge on the Cincinnati Bengals in their fifth straight AFC Championship game appearance, with the great Patrick Mahomes throwing two touchdowns and later scrambling to set up a last-gasp winning field goal from Harrison Butker to triumph 23-20 in a nervy affair at Arrowhead Stadium.

Kansas City will get all they can handle from Jalen Hurts and an incredibly well-rounded Eagles team, who claimed their fourth NFC title with a one-sided 31-7 beatdown of the injury-ravaged San Francisco 49ers at Lincoln Financial Field.

When is the Super Bowl 2023?

Super Bowl LVII takes place on Sunday February 12, 2023. The game will last for around three-and-a-half hours, with the potential for a 15-minute overtime period if the scores are level at the end of regulation.

That is up from the trimmed-down 10-minute overtime period seen during tied games in the regular season.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs will clash in the Super Bowl for the first time on Sunday.

It’s a third appearance in five seasons for Mahomes and the two-time winning Chiefs, while the Eagles are back on the biggest stage for the first time since lifting their maiden trophy by defeating Tom Brady’s New England Patriots in a thriller in 2018 thanks to back-up quarterback Nick Foles and help from that now iconic ‘Philly Special’ trick play.
