A new charging milestone for electric trucks was just achieved in California – and it’s a big one.
DC fast charger maker Kempower, electric long-haul truck maker Windrose, and EV Realty say they’ve completed a successful Megawatt Charging System (MCS) session at EV Realty’s San Bernardino charging hub. It’s the first time a Kempower Mega Satellite MCS has been used for charging in North America.
That matters because MCS is what heavy-duty electric trucks have been waiting for.
Why MCS matters
The Megawatt Charging System is designed to deliver more than 1 megawatt (MW) of power – far beyond today’s typical fast chargers. That means much faster charging for big electric trucks, shorter downtime, and more efficient fleet operations.
Truck makers are already moving in this direction, with several global manufacturers planning to roll out long-range electric trucks that have MCS charging capabilities.
But there’s been a big question hanging over the industry: Where will those trucks actually charge?
Suncheth Bhat, chief commercial officer at EV Realty, said, “We are building sites that can serve any heavy-duty truck, including those utilizing MCS. This test confirms that we will be ready for real-world MCS charging when the trucks hit the road later this year.”
Inside the San Bernardino site
EV Realty’s site is built with heavy-duty charging in mind. It includes a 1,200 kW Kempower Power Unit connected to two Kempower Mega Satellite MCS dispensers.
Together, they can deliver up to 1.2 MW and 1,500 amps of continuous power. The system uses liquid-cooled cables that help manage heat at these extremely high power levels and keep charging stable.
In practical terms, this setup is designed to keep electric trucks moving – cutting down turnaround times for fleets that rely on tight schedules.
The San Bernardino hub is expected to open in April 2026.
A step toward deployment
This wasn’t just a demo for show; it’s part of a broader push to make megawatt charging work across different truck brands in real-world conditions.
EV Realty says it’s building charging sites that can serve any heavy-duty electric truck, including those using MCS, as fleets prepare for new vehicles hitting the road later this year.
Kempower, meanwhile, has been working on MCS deployments in Europe over the past six months, partnering with truck makers, logistics companies, and charging operators to test the technology at scale.
The trucks are coming, and now the charging is starting to catch up.
