UK Defence Secretary meets Zelesnky in Kyiv as Ukraine needs ‘more means to destroy Russian missiles’

The British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has arrived in the Ukrainian capital to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

On Thursday Shapps and Zelensky are discussing to further arm Ukrainian forces in their fight against Vladimir Putin’s forces.

Zelensky has said that the UK has helped by significantly expanding the capabilities of the Ukrainian army on the battlefield, in particular thanks to long-range cruise missiles.

Ukraine is entering the winter months and they have also discussed issues of strengthening Ukrainian air defense which is a key priority to defend against the expected bombardments on their energy infrastructure.

Zelenskyy has told Shapps that Ukrainian forces also need more tools to destroy missiles, drones and aircraft.

“On behalf of the whole nation, I thank you for everything you are doing for us. We are grateful for your help – military, financial, humanitarian. We greatly appreciate that we can rely on you,” the president said.

On Wednesday evening President Zelensky said in his nightly video address, “There are special orders for the military, there will also be special orders for everyone involved in international affairs: our warriors need more means of destroying Russian missiles, ‘Shaheds’ and other combat drones, as well as Russian aircraft.”

He added, “And I am grateful to everyone in the world who is already helping and is willing to ramp up assistance to our country with the means that can provide more protection against Russian terror.”
