The US Marine Corps are looking for a missing “F-35 fighter jet” after a pilot ejected in a “mishap” over South Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

The F-35 jet which is built by Lockheed Martin is one of the worlds most advanced fighter jets and costs around £65 million.

The pilot who is based at Air Station Beaufort ejected over North Charleston, South Carolina and he was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

The jet is thought to be around Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion based on its location and trajectory, said Senior Master Sgt. Heather Stanton at Joint Base Charleston.

The US military cannot find the multi-million pound jet and have appealed to the public to help find it.

A very angry Congresswoman Nacy Mace blasted on social media, “How in the hell do you lose an F-35?

“How is there not a tracking device and we’re asking the public to what, find a jet and turn it in?”

Joint Base Charleston said in a tweet: “We’re working with MCASBeaufortSC to locate an F-35 that was involved in a mishap this afternoon.

“The pilot ejected safely. If you have any information that may help our recovery teams locate the F-35, please call the Base Defense Operations Center at 843-963-3600.”
