Volkswagen’s electric SUV will adopt the Tiguan name and a familiar style as part of its overhauled lineup. The new ID.4 is expected to debut later this year as the ID. Tiguan.

Volkswagen ID.4 will become the ID. Tiguan in 2027

The ID.4 arrived in 2020 as Volkswagen’s first fully electric SUV and the first dedicated EV under its ID lineup. As part of its next-generation EVs, Volkswagen is moving away from numerical naming.

Starting with the ID. Polo, set to launch this spring, Volkswagen is using established names for new EV models. Later this year, Volkswagen will introduce two new electric SUVs, the ID. Cross, an electric counterpart to the T-Cross, and the ID. Tiguan, which will replace the ID.4.

The ID. Tiguan will bring a new style with what Volkswagen’s design boss, Andreas Mindt, calls the “secret sauce.”

Recent spy photos confirm the new electric SUV will look more like the Tiguan, with a more traditional SUV profile.

The front end is overhauled with a more squared-off design rather than the current ID.4s rounded, aerodynamic face.

On the inside, it will look much like the ID. Polo and ID. Cross with Volkswagen’s new interior design. The setup features its latest infotainment system with a 10.25″ driver display and a 13″ touchscreen navigation. Volkswagen is also bringing back physical buttons for climate control and more, found under the infotainment and on the steering wheel.

We will learn the official driving range and other final specs closer to launch, but the ID. Tiguan is expected to ride on Volkswagen’s updated MEB+ platform.

It will likely benefit from Volkswagen’s recent battery advancements, which should improve driving range and charging speeds.

The current VW ID.4, powered by a 77 kWh battery, provides an EPA-estimated range of up to 291 miles in the RWD version. The AWD ID.4 drops to around 263 miles. On the WLTP scale, the 2026 VW ID.4 is rated with up to 351 miles (566 km) of driving range.

With lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, we could potentially see the ID. Tiguan (shown on the left above) arrives at a lower price than the current ID.4 (shown on the right above), especially with more competition hitting the market over the next few months.

The lowest-priced 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro starts at $45,095 in the US and around €40,000 ($46,000) in Europe.

Volkswagen’s new electric SUV will go up against the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevy Equinox EV, and Audi A6 e-tron in an increasingly crowded segment.

According to an Automotive News report earlier this year, the ID. Tiguan is expected to make its official debut by the end of 2026. It will replace the ID.4 at VW’s plant in Emden, Germany.

Will a new name and style help Volkswagen’s electric SUV compete? Let us know your thoughts on the ID. Tiguan in the comments below.
