While many thought the mystery could have been the Northern Lights making an appearance, one local thought it was a UFO.

Ruby Hilson said the first time she saw it, she thought it was an extraterrestrial.

She said: “There was this massive pink light. It looked like a disc.

“My brain initially went to ‘it’s a UFO’.”

But the real reason behind the bright pink was far from it.

The illumination was actually a special light to help plants grow.

Nick Denham, managing director of the business that produces the glow, said the lights are used to manipulate day light – and it’s something they’ve done for years.

He told the BBC: “It’s LED lights used for growing plants.

“[People are only just seeing it now] because of the energy crisis.

“We had to invest heavily in LED lights. But it means the light is pink and not white that people saw before.”

Nick’s company, The Plant Raisers, is based just off the M62.

It is the biggest plant propagator, which turns seeds into young plants before they are shipped off to growers.

From there, they are supplied to supermarket giants across the country.

The building has what Nick describes as a “curtain” which means the illuminate pink isn’t seen every night.

Once the glasshouses reach a certain temperature, the draw the curtain – meaning the light isn’t exposed.

He added: “If the outside temperature is above 12C, there’s a discussion about whether the curtain is on or not.”
