The Baltic states have issued a pressing warning in light of recent incidents involving breaches of their airspace by Russian drones, heightening existing concerns about potential consequences stemming from the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In a collaborative statement released this week, the defence ministers of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia confirmed that several unidentified foreign objects entered their national airspace and made contact with their territories.

These unauthorised incursions have raised significant alarms within the region, leading all three nations to expedite efforts to enhance their air defence systems.

Officials are particularly worried about the possibility that Russian drone activity may not only escalate but also become increasingly commonplace in the near future.

They said: “We, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, are taking resolute steps with prioritising our air defence development. However, recent incidents fuelled by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, demonstrate the importance to further strengthen multi-layered air defence.

“This week several foreign unmanned aerial vehicles have crossed NATO airspace in the Baltic states and struck our soil-struck or terittory.

“Fortunately, no civilians were injured, and the damage to infrastructure was minimal. We commend the professionalism of Allies contributing to NATO’s Air Policing Mission that helps to preserve the security of our airspace.

While the investigation is underway to determine all relevant details and circumstances, we remain steadfast in our support to Ukraine’s defensive operations against Russia and Ukraine’s legitimate right to self-defence.

As frontline members of NATO that share borders with Russia, the Baltic states perceive any violation of their airspace as a grave security risk. Such incidents not only threaten their sovereignty but also elevate the likelihood of misjudgements that could trigger wider confrontations between Russia and the NATO alliance.

This urgent warning underscores the mounting anxiety that the conflict in Ukraine could spill over beyond its current borders. The growing prevalence and unpredictability of drone warfare raise further questions about regional stability and the potency of existing defence measures.

The situation calls for vigilant monitoring and a revaluation of strategies to address emerging security challenges in this volatile geopolitical context.
