Rivian (RIVN) has officially started rolling out validation units of its highly anticipated R2 electric SUV from its factory in Normal, Illinois. CEO RJ Scaringe shared the news, confirming that the company is on track for customer deliveries in the first half of the year.

We have been closely following the progress of the R2 program, which is arguably the most critical vehicle in Rivian’s history. The R2 is designed to be Rivian’s “Model 3 moment”, a higher-volume, lower-cost vehicle that will allow the company to expand beyond the premium R1T and R1S market.

After pausing the Georgia factory plans to focus on launching R2 rapidly at the existing Normal facility, all eyes have been on the timeline.

Today, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe shared a significant update on X (formerly Twitter), showing R2 validation units officially rolling off the production line:

The Normal, Illinois plant has been modified to accommodate the new assembly lines dedicated to the R2 platform. Rivian managed to construct the 1.1 million square-foot expansion and install tooling in record time to meet its 2026 launch window.

Validation builds are typically the final stage before “saleable” production begins. These vehicles are built on the actual production line using production tooling, rather than being hand-built prototypes. They are used for final certification, crash testing, and EPA range validation.

Rivian has previously guided for R2 deliveries to begin in the first half of 2026. Many have been speculating that it could be early in the first half. With validation units now rolling out in January, the company seems well-positioned to hit that target, potentially starting customer deliveries in late Q1 or early Q2.

The R2 is expected to start around $45,000, putting it in direct competition with the Tesla Model Y, which was the best-selling car in the world last year.

We expect the first version to roll off the line to be the higher-end trim of the R2, starting at a price higher than $45,000.

Electrek’s Take

This is great news. I’ve been saying for a while that Rivian’s decision to pivot R2 production to Normal was the smart move. It saved them capital and, more importantly, time. Seeing validation units rolling off the line in January gives me a lot of confidence that they will hit that H1 2026 delivery target.

The timing is crucial because the $45,000 price point is where the volume is. Rivian has built a fantastic brand with the R1, but the R2 is what will determine if they can become a major mass-market automaker.

Now, the big question remains the gross margin. Rivian needs the R2 to be profitable, not out of the gate, but likely within the next 12 months. With the simplified design and new structural battery pack, on paper, it looks achievable.

I can’t wait to see that R2 on the road and go for a test drive. Rivian, please hit up your boy when you have review units.
